Sunday 15th April, 10am. CARNIVAL FOR CHOICE! Pro-Choice rally and march in Worthing!

We have called for a carnival for choice on this day as we are extremely alarmed at the continuation of US-styled anti-choice protests that have been happening outside abortion clinics in the UK.

One of the targets, both of the current ’40 days for life’ campaign and a sustained bi-weekly protest is a BPAS (British Pregnancy Advisory Service) Clinic in Brighton.
The group organising these protests outside the clinic is the aptly named ‘Abort67′ -a group that wants to make abortion illegal, regardless of circumstance, who are from Worthing, and supported and facilitated by a local church see http://www.abortionrights.org.uk/content/view/452/110/. They use extreme graphic images of aborted foetuses on large boards and banners, film on cameras, and have been known to call women murderers and physically encircle them.

Starting at Worthing High School, where they congregate on a Sunday, and heading into the centre of town for a spectacular finale. Bring placards, instruments, your friends and a smile!

Emergency Save the NHS Protest

KILL THE BILL
Meet Hove Town Hall 3:30pm Saturday 17th March

The Health and Social Care Bill is expected to be in Parliament on 19th March. This bill still represents a huge step towards the privatisation of our NHS. Health workers don’t want it, patients don’t want it, we must say NO!
We will be protesting outside the Tory Party Office in Hove, please make an effort to join us.
The government must see the opposition to this incredibly unpopular and destructive bill.

RESISTING AUSTERITY – FROM ATHENS TO BRIGHTON!

PUBLIC MEETING Mon 5th MARCH 7pm

Friends Meeting House, Ship St, Brighton

Kostas Skordoulis An activist in the Education Workers Union and the OKDE – part of the anti-capitalist coalition Antarsya – he grew up when Greece was ruled by a US backed military dictatorship until 1974.

He will speak about the resistance to austerity in Greece today, the role of the unions, and the popular demand for Greece to default on its debt.  He will also talk about moves towards Europe wide resistance to austerity.

And while the official Brighton opposition to the government argues about a 3.5% council tax rise, Kostas will bring the idea of defaulting on “our” debt as a way of saying “we’re not paying for the crisis”. Is default, alongside redistributing wealth, a way of stopping all the cuts?

George Barrett spent 50 years in the Labour Party, and was part of the group of Labour councillors who helped kick out Barking’s 12 BNP councillors in 2012.

But when he resigned from the Labour Group on Barking Council in order to vote against cuts, he ended up getting expelled from the party.

He said “Local councillors, trade unions and community groups should be uniting to resist the devastation of the welfare state. By passing on the government cuts, Labour councils are collaborating with the austerity measures which are increasing poverty. Instead, they should be defending the voters that elected them.

With only one Green Party councillor not voting for the cuts budget in Brighton and Hove recently, George’s experience raises the question about what we should be expecting anti-cuts councillors to do.

Planning Local Resistance

Council Cuts, Workfare, Opposing the Health Bill and 28th March Pensions Strike

There will be time for questions and discussion after our guest speakers, but it will be limited as our meeting also needs to help organise local activity against the cuts.

With the protests against workfare causing the government and businesses to back track on their plans, we’ll be planning how we can give support to the local Brighton Benefits Campaign’s campaign against workfare and other cuts to benefits.

A council worker who had their post deleted in this year’s cuts will lead off a discussion about the cuts planned in Brighton & Hove and what the union’s response is likely to be.

The meeting will then have time to discuss and plan various ways of working with & community groups and the unions to prevent each cut.

We will also be discussing how we can help those local trade unionists in the NUT, PCS and UCU who will be striking in defence of their pensions on March 28th.

This part of the meeting is usually the “business” part of Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition meetings, but we hope those coming to hear our guest speakers will stay and get involved in the practical business of building opposition to the cuts locally.

Brighton Stop the Cuts Coalition welcomes new people and fresh ideas.

We will continue to build a broad coalition of trade union and community groups to actively oppose all cuts.

So if you want to hear about resistance to austerity in Greece, how a councillor in London thinks councils can resist the cuts, and help us plan resistance to the cuts locally, come along to our open meeting on Monday 5th March.

Greens to debate Budget with Anti-Cuts groups and Unions

Open Public Debate 2nd Feb 7:30pm Friends Meeting House
In the run up to the 2012 budget meeting, where local cuts and council tax will be decided, a debate has been arranged between Green Councillors, Stop the Cuts and Council Unions.
On Thursday 2nd February 7:30pm in Friends Meeting House, Jason Kitkat, cabinet member for finance, will be debating with Stop the Cuts activists and council unions how can we campaign and fight to make sure we defend jobs, services, and expose the results of the government’s ‘rob the poor to give to the rich’ programme. Many activists will be pressing the Greens to refuse to implement local cuts altogether and set a budget in defiance of the government rather than wield the government axe themselves.
As the wealth of the 1000 richest people in Britain continues to soar to heights the rest of can barely comprehend, increasing by £137 Billion in the last 2 years alone (if each pound was stacked up this would reach past the moon), it is very clear that we are not ‘all in this together’. But how do we get this message out and stop the cuts? In the face of this do councilors really have to pass cuts budgets?
Please come along and put your questions to the speakers as well as raising your own campaigning ideas and explaining what campaigns can do to support each other.

Protect B & H Music & Arts Service!

Currently 2,500 children each week are engaged in Music Service activities across the city, including 500 families from low-income backgrounds who access subsidies through the service.

The Green council is proposing to completely cut the £249,000 local grant to the music service by 2013. The central government grant through the National Music Plan will also be reduced from £346,923 to £237,872 by 2014. If this happens, the funding for the music service will be less than half the current level. The fees for musical activities will inevitably rise, putting them beyond the reach of many children and leading to the decline of the service.

We believe that an ‘outstanding’ Music and Arts Service, such as we have in Brighton and Hove, is an integral part of a comprehensive education for all children in our city. We urge the Council to reverse this proposed cut that will directly impact on children and young people across the area.

What can we do about this? PTO for ideas!

‘Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, and life to everything. . . . Without music, life would be an error.’ Plato

What can we do to defend the music service?

• Write to your local councillors to ask them not to cut the service. It’s important that they receive as many letters as possible on this issue before 26 Jan. To find the names of your councillors, go to http://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/mgMemberIndex.aspx?bcr=1.

• Sign our petition, Music and Arts Service Cuts, on the B&H council website: http://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/mgePetitionListDisplay.aspx?bcr=1

• ‘Like’ our Facebook page ‘Protest against the Green Council in Brighton and Hove slashing Music budget’.

• Email stopmusiccuts@gmail.com to say how you or your family have benefited from the music service and we’ll pass on your views to the Council.

• Come to the lobby of the Council meeting where we’ll be presenting our petition from 4pm on 26 January, Hove Town Hall.

• Join the campaign!
Email stopmusiccuts@gmail.com to go on our mailing list.

Stop the Cuts New Year New Resistance!

Hi all and hope it has been a good new year.

Sadly the government’s slash and burn of our public services and welfare state looks set to continue so if you haven’t yet made a resolution yet maybe getting stuck into the fight back could be one!

Below are upcoming events. Many are to do with the local council cuts, where we will be organising lobbies of the council meetings and a public meeting on defending our council services.

Also this Saturday coming we would very much encourage all trade unionists to head up to London to attend the PCS Left Unity Conference on Defending Pensions. With the fantastic united front from virtually all unions on November 30th looking shaky this conference has been opened up by Left Unity (which much of the leadership of PCS belong to) to all trade union members to plan how we can push all our unions to fight to win. This conference has the backing of a whole number of the left groups of various unions and there is no need to register in advance. More info is here http://www.leftunity.org.uk/

A group will be heading up from Brighton meeting at the station at 9:20am on the 7th Jan, please feel free to come along and join us, the conference starts at 11am at Friends Meeting House by Euston Station.

Finally please sign this petition to save Sussex Uni’s Centre for Community Engagement

Thanks

Phil

30th November Strikes Brighton United!

A fantastic response to the strike was seen across Brighton and Hove. Across schools, council workplaces, job centres and a multitude of civil service workplaces the strike was solid. At the universities the response was the same, with Brighton University shutting completely for the first time during industrial action together with large pickets on NHS workplaces and across the city.

With an unprecedented level of coordination, three major feeder marches from large picket lines joined with thousands more at Victoria Gardens to form up for the main march. In what the local paper described as ‘Sussex’s biggest ever protest’ the GMB delegation led up to 10,000 strikers and supporters through the city. The atmosphere was lively and determined and many thousands stayed on at the Level to hear speakers from Unison, GMB, Unite, NUT, PCS, UCU, NASUWT, Brighton Benefits Campaign, local MP Caroline Lucas, and a student activist from Sussex Uni. Thanks to support from Unite conferences being held in Brighton this week, strikers were also treated to a rousing speech by a leader of the US Teamsters union. The message of the day was clear; the workers of Brighton and Hove are determined to do what it takes to defend our pensions, and if necessary, strike again.

Unison Deputy General Secretary, Jon Richards, summed it up – “what a fantastic response by Brighton and Hove – second to none”.
